The Washington, Jefferson & Madison Institute is a non-profit Virginia corporation based in Charlottesville, Virginia, founded by J. David Gowdy. The Institute's charter is “To Perpetuate the Study of the Teachings and Examples of the Founders of the Republic” and its mission is to “To instill within educators and students of the rising generation a greater understanding of and appreciation for the Founding Fathers and the Founding Documents of the United States of America.”〔() About the Institute〕 Its maxims are "Virtue, Liberty & Knowledge."
The Washington, Jefferson & Madison Institute holds seminars for secondary school teachers who teach U.S. Government, Civics, and U.S. History, and civic groups. Seminars are held at Prospect Hill.〔() Prospect Hill, Virginia〕 In 2012, Tony Williams was hired as program director of the Institute. Mr. Williams, who resides in Williamsburg, Virginia, is a teacher and the author of four books on the American Founding, including "America's Beginnings: The Dramatic Events that Shaped a Nation's Character" (Rowman & Littlefield, 2010).

The Washington, Jefferson and Madison Institute published “Thomas Jefferson & James Madison’s Guide to Understanding and Teaching the Constitution”〔() Thomas Jefferson & James Madison's Guide to Understanding and Teaching the Constitution〕 in 2009. The Guide is intended to assist teachers, students, parents, and citizens in understanding and appreciating the Constitution of the United States of America. It is designed as a handbook for studying the Constitution in the tradition of the founders, using the source documents and writings identified by them at the founding of the University of Virginia as the "best guides" to its principles and meaning.〔() Minutes of the Board of Governors of the University of Virginia, March 4, 1825〕
